1-to-1 vs Small Group Goalkeeper Training: Which Is Right for You?

Sometimes you need time with a coach to work on something that isn’t quite coming together in matches. Other times, you want to get on the pitch with other keepers, push each other and get feedback as you go.

At EvoGK, we offer both 1-to-1 and small-group goalkeeper training. An individual session gives you the coach’s full attention. Small-group coaching lets you train alongside other keepers while still receiving specialist feedback.

The right choice depends on what you want to work on and how you prefer to learn.

When 1-to-1 Coaching Makes Sense

An individual session gives you time to look closely at your own game.

Perhaps your distribution is letting you down, or you’re unsure about your positioning in certain situations. Rather than trying to cover everything, you and the coach can spend time understanding what’s happening and working through it.

There’s room to stop, ask a question, make an adjustment and try again. The session can move at your pace, with feedback directed entirely towards you.

You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what the problem is, either. Explaining what happens in matches or sharing feedback from your club coach gives us somewhere to start.

That’s the main value of 1-to-1 coaching: time to work on what you need, without sharing the coach’s attention.

What You Get From Small-Group Training

Small-group coaching gives you specialist feedback while training alongside other goalkeepers.

You’re still working on your own development, but there’s something to learn from the other keepers too. Watching someone approach a practice differently, or listening to the feedback they receive, can help you understand what to change when it’s your turn.

For players who enjoy training with others, the company and friendly competition can make sessions more enjoyable.

The coach’s time is shared, though, so it’s worth asking how the group works. How many keepers take part? How are players matched? Will the session give you time to work on the things you need help with?

Those details matter more than simply calling a session a “small group”.

Which Option Suits a New Goalkeeper?

Being new to the position doesn’t automatically mean you need individual coaching.

Some keepers appreciate time alone with a coach while they find their feet. Others feel more comfortable joining a group and learning alongside players who are working things out too.

For parents, it helps to ask your child what they would enjoy and discuss their experience with the coach before choosing. Our guide to goalkeeper training for kids covers what to look for in coaching as a young player develops.

Experienced goalkeepers have the same choice. You might enjoy regular group training but want individual attention on one part of your game.

Can You Do Both?

You don’t have to choose one format and stick with it.

Regular small-group training with an occasional 1-to-1 session is one option to discuss with your coach. For example, you might use an individual session to work through something you’ve struggled with, then continue developing it alongside other keepers.

The important thing is that the extra coaching fits around your existing football. Tell the coach about your club sessions and matches rather than booking more training simply because it’s available.

Choosing Your Next Session

Think about what you want help with first. A specific issue that needs closer attention may be a good reason to try 1-to-1 coaching. Training alongside other keepers may suit you better when you want regular feedback in a shared setting.

Check the practical details too, including session length, group size, price and availability. Neither format is automatically better value; it depends on what the session offers and whether it meets your needs.

You can enquire about both formats through our goalkeeper coaching in Newcastle and goalkeeper coaching in Shropshire, or explore our wider goalkeeper training options.

Tell us a little about your experience and what you’d like to work on. We’ll confirm what’s available and help you choose a suitable session.
